A Tribute

Long time no post. I've been Internet-lessness for a week.

I've been working on a story involving a recent character I made up. So far, here's part one. I'll be posting part two at a later date.

“Open the doors! Please, for the love of the gods, open the doors!”

The soldier walked up to the stable doors wearily. War was upon the land, and any stranger seeking refuge could be a trap by the enemy. Even so, he doubted that they would use women in the dead of night for such things.

“Who are you, and what do you seek?” he called out over the rain and thunder.

“My name is Amelius, and I seek refuge for the night! Please, I beg of you, I’ve been traveling for hours!”

“Fine, I’ll let you in, but I will have to put you under custody!”

“I don’t care, let me in!” the woman called out.

He unbolted the door and slowly opened it. He held out his torch to see the woman’s face in the night. She was soaked down to the bone, and shivering violently. Her black hair extended about four inches past her shoulders, and she had a bandaged eyepatch over her left eye. “Inside, hurry,” he said in a low voice, closing the door behind her.

“Thank you…” the woman said breathlessly. She looked hardly older than seventeen or eighteen. Her shirt’s right sleeve was torn off, and her arm was bound up in bandages, and held up in a sling.

“Look, ma’am, I need to take you to the prison block. I’m sorry, but it’s regulations,” the soldier said, throwing a blanket over her shoulders. She grabbed it with her good hand and tried to tighten it around her. He helped tuck it in a bit.

“I don’t care… I need to speak to your king tomorrow…” she said. The soldier led her off, and placed her in a single cell, letting her keep the blanket.

Lord And Master King Terfinus sat on his throne, looking over the battle plans for the upcoming war. And messenger walked with his head bowed and whispered into his ear.

“Very well, bring her forward,” he grunted, motioning servants to take the table away. A soldier brought up a young woman, probably not older than eighteen before him. Two soldiers held chains strapped to her ankles.

“A refugee, sire.”

“What is your name, child?” he asked, rubbing the grizzled stubble on his chin.

“I am Amelius D. Rodgers,” she responded, keeping eye contact with the king.

“An alien name. You are not from around here,” the king remarked mockingly. Amelius bit down on her lip to prevent the vile comment from slipping.

“Yes, it is. I need to ask something of you,” she said, trying to keep the cynical tone out of her voice.

“And what is that, peasant?”

Amy closed her eyes and held her trembling fists closed.

“I ask if I may use your royal library. I seek a cure for my family, and I have heard that the library of your castle holds more knowledge than the world combined twice-over,” she asked, adding a hint of pleading to her tone. She was half-right. She sought a cure, but she had no family to cure.

“Hmm…So, you are some outsider, coming and eating our military rations, then demand that you use our services even further?” the man said, leaning forward in his throne. “No.”

“But my lord, please –!” she began but was cruelly interrupted.

“That is final! Now throw her out before I decide to feed her to the torverines. Bring me the Tactical Map!” he yelled, dismissing Amy with a shooing hand, servants bringing the table back in front of him.

The two soldiers grabbed her by the arms and dragged her from the castle.

“I…I’m so hungry…” “For what?” “I – I don’t know…” “Are you sure?” “Yes. Yes, I think…so…” “What drives you?” “Hunger…and -,” “And what? What else drives you?” “…fear…” “What scares you so much?” ”Myself…I – I don’t want it to happen…” “Do I scare you? Are you afraid of me?” “I – I don’t know…” “Please, you can tell me. There’s nothing to be afraid of.” “You…I’m so hungry…” “In time we can feed.” “It hurts! I can’t take it anymore…” “I know, I know. We’ll be there soon.” “Can’t you feel the tears! I – I’m crying?” “You’ve cried before. When you lost your friend. When the fear in his eyes changed -,” “Stop it! I don’t want to remember that!” “Hahahahaha!” “Who are you?” “You should know by now.” “I – I’m going mad…Please let it end…” “We’re almost there, my sweet.” “It hu~rts…”

Free day tomorrow. Two exams left, the gauntlet is almost finished.
This story took me a few days to write, mainly because I doubt just how good it really is...
Well, read and let me know (I've set comments to public, so that even strangers can comment)

"You know, I really think this is the end..."
Marcee looked out of the window. The sky was blood red, the streets deserted. The dim red light filtered through the curtains when she closed them.
"Really? What makes you think that?" she said sarcastically.
"I mean, we've been holed up inside here for three days. Surely it has to end soon, right?" Marc said. She didn't really like him, but a companion was better than none in this madness that was Armageddon.
She stood up, the chair scraping loudly. Marc winced at the noise.
"Look, if it would come down here because we made a racket, then it would have done it already," she snapped. She put her fist against her forehead, closing her eyes. "Look, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to snap at you...I'm sure you know that this whole thing has me on edge right now."
"It's...it's okay..."
Four days ago, the sun went out. For thirty-seconds the world was plunged into darkness. Suddenly, a large black orb with two rings of glowing red energy replaced the now absent sun. People immediately knew that World's End had commenced. Luckily, Marcee was inside when it happened. The rings of energy had shot out and grabbed two people at a time, pulling them into the black orb. Non-surprisingly, and almost like a bad cliche, all communication had ceased with the outside world. Marcee had seen people attempt to communicate via smoke signals, and morse code. If only she knew either of the two languages.
"I - I'm tired of waiting in here..." Marcus said despondently. He stood up and walked to the door.
"Wait! What are you doing!" Marcee cried out.
"I'm ending it all. I'm ready to die, Marcee. I'm sorry for all the trouble I've caused you, but I can't live in this suspense anymore." He opened the door and walked out.
"Marcus! No!" she yelled, but dared not to step out into the open.
For a second, she thought that he had made it. That he wouldn't have been plucked up by one of the rings, when suddenly, another man walked out, arms held high, looking at the orb. There was a loud crack as the two were plucked into the air and swallowed into the ball.
"Marcus you idiot!"
She walked back to the kitchen and sat down, trying to hold back the hot tears of anger. Men were weak. This was just blatant proof of it. She was right on deciding never to marry.
She banged her fist against the table so hard that the wood made a splintering noise. Now she had to live alone in this nightmare.
She went to the bathroom, and splashed her face with water. Through the crack in the curtains, she could see the orb in the sky, waiting.
She dismissed it and turning around.
As she closed the door to the bathroom, there was a loud and horrible wailing. She ran to the kitchen again, and look out at the sky. The orb had opened up to reveal a maw of twisted teeth, busy wailing. Marcee's eyes widened in shock and fear as the wailing grew louder, and the maw started to draw in air. She could almost feel the eternal hunger radiating from the orb's presence.
The roof started to moan and creak. Marcee ran and dived under a table, knowing what was about to happen. The roof gave one final heave, before being torn off and pulled into towards the endless maw of hungering blades. The table started to rattle, before it too got sucked into the apocalyptic sphere.
"I won't die like this! It's not fair!" she scream, as her efforts to hold onto a window sill was thwarted. She saw other people too were being pulled into the black sphere.
She started to sob uncontrollably when she saw that some people got caught on the teeth, being shredded into bloody pieces.
"I...I don't want to die..." she cried, her eyes taking on a dead look. Her body became a rag doll as it was pulled into the maw. As she looked out at the world she was leaving behind, she noticed the maw closing.
And the world was dark.
"Marcee Credens. It is not yet your time."
She shielded her eyes from the bright light, before her eyes readjusted to it. She was standing in an empty white space.
"What do you mean?" she asked, looking around for the source of the voice.
"World's End has not come yet. This was a test. You are the only one who has passed," the voice said again, sounding like a thousand voices in one.
"I don't understand."
"We have tested the resolve and the hearts of all citizens on your world. You, are the only one that has passed."
"But I-"
"Your childhood was corrupted, had you lived a different life, you would care for those around you more than you do now. But you fought until the very end, and your heart remains pure. The only others that wished to survive, were those not worthy of living."
"So what happens now...?" Marcee said, not really wanting the answer.
"You will become the harbinger of a new world. You will reshape the world to your liking, preparing it for the final World's End. The hero elected to save your world will be modeled in your image. We have no time to act, there are two generations left until the World's End."
"So...I'm now God...?" Marcee questioned, her heart beating in her throat.
"Incorrect. Your God lies in panic, unable to intervene at the False End that has just occurred. You have become the Re-creator. You have seventy years to model the hero that will prevent World's End."
"But, there's no one left on earth anymore! Who am I supposed to save?!" she yelled.
"The world has been restored. You may remodel it to your wishes. The memory of your life has been erased, and the False End has never occurred."
"Who
are you?"
"We are everyone. We are the people of this world, yet none of them at the same time." Marcee couldn't help but note how cliched that sounded. "We go by the name of -" it's name was like the laughter, cries, shouts, and voices of all the people in the world.
"What if I fail you?"
"You will not. We require to survive."
"Very well, I will not fail you..." Marcee said, a small grin coming to her face. They were just as bad as the greedy oil-merchants that corrupted the world. World's End will happen, and if she goes with it, then so be it. If only they had put restraint's on her power...
"Her name will be Marietta Credens, and she will be invincible one day..."

Author's Note:
This has almost become a prelude to another story I wrote, titles World's End.

I think it as my best work, and none of my stories have ever lived up to it.

By a Dark Deed this Day, I send Thee Away.

Writing exams now. Don't know whether I hate it or love it. Hate it, because I need to study (and I don't like doing that). Love it because I have sooo much free time (I don't have to be at school when not writing an exam).

I've roughly 2 fifths way through all of the exams in total. Jubilations.

She stood up, looking around at the field. She remembered when it was once white with snow. Now, it was grey, desolate. Broken buildings jabbed ferociously at the skies above.
Freya walked towards the old husk of a building standing at the end of a walk-way of dead fir trees. Freya remembered the building very well. She had lived there for a short portion of her life.
Out of common-courtesy, or out of the madness of being alone for so long, she knocked on the door patiently.
After not receiving a reply, she carefully pushed the door open. She gasped as it fell off its hinges from decay.
She looked around the 'Front-Office' that Miss Harkin had once fondly called it. The desk was still there, almost untouched by the mass of nuclear missiles that had ignited the area two years ago. She was immune to the radiation.
She went to what was once her room. She smiled fondly, remembering the times she had with past friends.
She walked out the room and into another that had been always been locked by the foster-home's mistress. It, too, fell off from its hinges when she pushed on it gently.
Through the door was a flight of stairs that lead downwards into a dark, forboding, nothingness. She wondered if there was electricity to the building even?
She took out a Zippo light from her pocket, lit it and adjusted her glasses, before walking down the concrete stairs slowly. She heard a soft whirring noise of fans in the room. Hoping against all hope, she felt around for a light-switch.
Her heart skipped a beat when she found one, and switched it on. Lights came on, revealing a room with large server machines. She pocketed her Zippo, and walked up to the console screen.
There was a single sentence written on the fading screen.
"What are the Two most important things to life?"
Freya blew the cloud of dust off the keyboard, before typing the answer.
"Love and Sacrifice"
The screen flashed "Correct" before turning off. There was the sound of compressed air, when the wall behind the console depressed inwards, before opening up to reveal a cylindrical chamber, with a woman in suspended-animation floating inside it.
"Mom...?" she said in awe, looking that the first base for all of the clones that had fueled the war. It was some of her DNA that had been used to create all of the clones. Even herself.
Except, she was different.
Freya was created with a different seed-number. She was created to end the war, before it had even began. She had failed, but now she had the chance to at least stop it now.
She walked up to the glass, touching it lightly. There was a special DNA sonic emitter built into her mother. It would stop the hearts of all Clones that had been spawned with her DNA.
She laughed to herself, realising that all these years, it had been sitting right in front of her eyes. She could have saved millions. She could have saved her friends.
She walked back to the console, typing in a phrase.
"By a dark deed this day, I send thee away"
The screen responded with "Are you sure?"
Her hand shaking and her heart beating up in her throat, she slowly typed "Yes". She was going to die, too. She, after all, was also one of the many clones.
She pressed enter, and saw the suspended corpse begin to move. Its eyes opened, the usual dead look behind them. There was a glowing from under the flesh in the dead woman's chest, and Freya felt her heart stop beating.
Her vision blurred as the blood flow to her brain ceased. She was gasping for air for some reason. She fell to her knees, sweating as pain started to seep into all of her muscles from the lack of oxygen. The 4.10 seconds it was taking for her to die felt like minutes, even hours.
"Freya, my child."
She looked up at the glowing figure hovering before her. White angel wings kept it aloft.
"M...mom...?" she croaked softly.
"You have lived a sad life, I'm sorry for what I've done to you. I've put you through so much pain."
Freya wanted to respond to the angel, but she could feel the world fading around her, and she couldn't speak anymore.
"I love you, Freya, as I have with all my children. So, I want to know, do you wish to be reborn into this world, where you will have the chance to live a normal life, as a normal girl? Or do you wish to move on?"
Freya closed and then opened her eyes. She was standing now, looking at her body. It was slumped over on the floor, and had stopped breathing. Her body shone slightly, like the souls of the recently deceased always did.
"I have no regrets to how I lived my life. I could never have asked for better friends than the ones I met in this life-time. Mother, take me away to that sacred place. I want to see my friends again."
"As you wish, my child."
Freya felt herself lift slowly, the room growing bright.
"Freya, we're proud of you." She opened her eyes to see her two long-lost friends.
"Rika...Melissa...I...I..." tears filled her eyes as she stumbled towards them.
"It's okay, Freya. We're family again."
